Desensitizing to strangers/ workers in the house.
Here I'm helping Joey, remain calm and under threshold while there are workers in the home. I have him on leash so that I can help redirect him when he begins to escalate. He already knows the engage/disengage protocol which means that he is able to look at the trigger and look away calmly back at me. When he does this, the behavior is reinforced by a food reward. This keeps his cortisol levels steady and ensures that the behavior is repeated. I also walk him away, and create distance from the trigger the moment I notice that he is starting to get stiff body language and hyper -focused. At one point I let him look for too long and he goes over threshold. That was me misreading his ability in that moment.
